Rengstorff Shoreline CERT Radio Check-in

Held on the First Monday of each month at 7:00 pm on Channel #15

CERT Team members are encouraged to join the monthly radio check-in.

We will hold check-ins at 7:00 p.m. on the first Monday of each month.  They won't take long. The radio check-in will last anywhere from a few minutes to 15 minutes depending on the number of participants.

You will transmit from your residence or workplace in Mountain View on your own FRS radio (walkie=talkie) or GMRS radio on our designated neighborhood frequency - Channel #15. (Loaner radios are available if you do not yet have one.)

Check-ins help the team practice radio skills and develop more emergency preparedness capability.

The radio check-in is a Directed Net, which means that someone will act as Net Control and direct the radio traffic.  Turn your radio on to channel 15 by 7:00 pm. Net Control will announce the Net (check-in), make any announcements, and ask people to check in by stating their first name and location (specific or general). When asked, participants will relay any information that is not heard by the Net Control.

Some things to think about in advance:

  • Have your radio battery charged
  • Know how to turn on your radio
  • Depending on your structure, you may have to be outside for better radio reception
  • Wait a second or two after you push the "Push-to-Talk" transmit button before speaking
  • Hold radio 1-2 inches from mouth and speak across the front of the radio - not directly into the radio (to reduce interference from plosives (puffy air sounds)
  • Only one person can transmit (audibly) at a time
  • Keep communications brief and succinct

Net Control:

This is station [if using GMRS transmitter; i.e.: “WRFP3030"] - is this frequency in use?

This is [name] - Net Control - for the Rengstorff Shoreline CERT.

We are commencing monthly check-ins to practice radio operations and ensure that we will be ready to communicate in a time of need.  We will be using this channel for approximately 10-15 minutes.

To check in, please state your first name and an approximate location - it can be a street address or a nearby intersection.

After people check in, I will acknowledge all that I hear and ask if there are any relays for transmissions I did not hear.

I will now take check-ins from CERT team members.  Please go ahead....

CERT Team member #1:
